1 Execution site(s)
Nina R. explains: "One of my neighbors wrote a denunciation letter, accusing my grandparents of hiding a child. I was dressed in only a blouse and I was taken on a truck to the execution site. The Germans and policemen shot some people. I remember I was above the ravine, the sun was shining. They were rushing to execute us because it was already the year 1944." (Witness N°103, interviewed in Bilohirsk on December 24, 2004).
"In December 1941, the German authorities gave the head of the Jews the order that all Jews had to report to the town council with their things to be sent to work. All these Jews were taken to Sadovaya Street and their things were loaded onto a truck in the SD’s building. […] All of the Jews were shot and buried in the anti-tank trench." [Act drown up by the Extraordinary Soviet Commission, on May 1945; RG-22.002M/7021-9/80].
Bilohirsk is located 45 km from Simferopol. A Jewish (Krymchak) community existed since the 14th century. Before the war, there were 2 synagogues in the village, an Askhenazi one and a Krymchak one. The majority of Jews were merchants or artisans. Upon the arrival of the Germans on November 1, 1941, 62 Askhenazi Jews and 468 Krymchaks were registred by the Germans. 250 Jews mamaged to escape before the occupation.
The first anti-Jewish measure began on December 10, 1941 when 76 Jews were executed by the Germans in an anti-tank trench near the hatchery. According to Yahad’s witness, Nina B. (N°266), these Jews were shot on December 11, 1941 in an anti-tank trench called “Kilometer 10” over 3 days. On January 17-18, 1942, 468 Krymchaks from the village and surrounding settlements were killed in a gas van and buried outside the village. The remaining Jews were executed later because they were artisans and worked for the Germans.
