Konstantin I. recalled: "The ghetto was created. One part of the village was surrounded with barbed wire. This ghetto was guarded by policemen who watched to make sure that the Jews did not escape." (Witness N°1429, interviewed in Derazhne, on April 12, 2012).
"On the orders of the Gebietskomissar of Kostopol, a ghetto surrounded with a barrier and barbed wire was organized where the entire Jewish population of the district of Derazhne, approximately 1,900 people, was gathered. They were held in the ghetto from the autumn of 1942 until the autumn of 1943." ( Deposition of Haïm L, made on November 1944, RG-22.002M/7021-71/47
Derazhne is located 38 kilometers northwest of Rivne. In 1897, there were 770 Jews living in the village and in 1921, 592 Jews resided there.
Units of the German 6th Army entered the village on June 28, 1941. A ghetto was established on October 5, 1941. The German gendarmerie and the Ukrainian police liquidated the ghetto on August 24, 1942. 1,868 Jews were killed altogether in the nearby village of Osowa Wyszka.
