Yanina T. : "About 3000 people were killed inside the castle. We were told that almost every day people were taken in cars to be killed. My aunt saw the Jews who said goodbye with their white handkerchiefs. We could hear the gunfire." (Witness N°390 interviewed in November, 2010)
On January 7th, 1943, I removed some snow from the road. It was an icy cold. Civilians in 3 big trucks were brought, followed by a car and we made them come down near the fort. Immediately after, I heard shooting of submachine guns followed by isolated shootings. [Testimony of Ivan T., born in 1895, farmer, RG 13(3) p.1-24]
Naumovichi is a small village located a few kilometers North of Grodno. The village was under German occupation from 1941 to 1944.
Nearly 3000 persons from Grodno, including Jews from intelligentsia were killed during the war in an old fort close to the village, and their corpses were buried in a yard near the fort. At the end of the war, Operation 1005 aimed to burn the corpses was carried out. As most of the actions were carried out inside the fort, there were nearly no eye witnesses of the shootings, but several testimonies collected on the ground by the Yahad In-Unum team mention columns of trucks taking the victims to the fort.
