Tamara M. : "In the camp, the conditions were very bad for the Jews. It was cold, there were no blankets and people slept on straw. Many Jews suffered from typhoid and, later, the disease spread throughout the village. I also suffered from this disease." (Witness N°1014, interviewed in August, 2010)
"Typhoid broke out in Raygorod. For that reason, we knew that the camp was going to be liquidated. Later, I walked in some woods and nearly 50 meters away, several members of the SS were busy shooting Jews. These Jews were at the edge of a pit and were shot with submachine guns so that they then fell into the pit." [Raygorod inhabitant testimony, B162-6168]
Raygorod is a village on the main road between Vinnytsia and Uman. In 1900, there were around 1,000 Jews living there. The village was under German occupation between 1941 and 1944.
A camp was created in the village, which also accommodated Jews from Transnistria. They had to work on the construction of the main road DG IV, which went from Lviv to the Caucasus. The camp was liquidated during two different actions in spring 1942. The Jews were killed in a forest close to the village.
