Galina C. evokes: "I saw a Jewish column passing. There were approximately twenty. They were demoralized, they were sad, and their clothes were dirty. With my friends, we followed the column up to the ravine, and when the shooting began, we ran away because we were very afraid." (Witness N°1587, interviewed in November, 2012)
"The Germans gathered 50 people in a cellar, mostly Jews. To judge the shouts coming from the cellar, in particular the pleas of the children, during the night, prisoners underwent inhuman tortures." [Act of the Soviet Extraodinary State Commission, RG-22004/7021-60/330]
Maryinka is a small city west of Donetsk. There were a few Jewish families living there, mostly assimilated. The city was under German occupation between 1941 and 1943.
Having been locked up in the police station, the Jews of the city and the surrounding villages, were killed in a pit near the cemetery. In the same place there were other categories of victims, such as communists.
