Witness interview

Yevdokia Z. stated: “I saw how the Germans brought the Hungarian Jews. I saw the shooting of the Jews: they dug a big grave, which they put a plank over. Then, the Jews got undressed and were shot. I saw how the Jews were brought to the shooting, I didn’t see the excavation of the grave. The shooting took place at the Jewish cemetery. The shooter was from the Gestapo and came from Tatariv.” (Eyewitness N°1851, interviewed in Tatariv, on September 8, 2013).

“After that, I ordered the Ukrainian militia to catch the Jews, to gather them in small areas and to dig big graves. Once the work was done by the militia, I went to the site with my men and we shot the Jews. I checked the names of the dead Jews. Then, I sent the list to Krüger K. who was in Stanislau. Again, there were Jews of all ages, men, women and children. Such actions were taken in Yablonytsya, Tatariv, Vorokhta. During these actions, 800 people were killed.” [Deposition of Ernst V., made in Schwarzenbeck, on April 16, 1962, B162-4993]

Historical note

Tatariv is situated about 80km south of Ivano-Frankivsk. Before the war, Ukrainians, Pole and Jews lived in Tatariv. From the research, Yahad was able to establish that the Jewish community of Tatariv was not very big, although they had a cemetery and a Jewish elementary school.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

According to Yevdokia Z., the Tatariv Jews were gathered and deported to Ivano-Frankivsk ghetto or shot on the spot. Thanks to her testimony, we were able to identify the mass execution site of Jews from the Transcarpathian region, mostly likely shot by a special German sub-branch of security police from Tatariv (Aussenstelle). The German in charge of the extermination sat at a table and drank alcohol while shooting the Jews. From her house, Yevdokia could see the Jews digging the pit, disrobing and walking on to the plank.  The Jews were shot one by one with a pistol. Today, the execution site at the abandoned Jewish cemetery, situated close to the river, does not have a monument.
