Witness interview

Yevstakiy Y. recalls: "They had to undress next to the road…They took everything off! Their valuables, earrings, rings, clothes, everything! Then, in pairs, they walked completely naked about 300 meters from the road to the cemetery. Once there, they had to walk six at a time onto the plank. Someone shot them with a machine gun and they fell into the pit. Some were wounded, others alive or shot dead…they were all in this pit. That is the story…" (Witness N°733, interviewed in Bibrka, on January 09, 2009)

Historical note

Bibrka is located 30 km from Lviv. Before the German’s arrival , there were 2,000 Jews living in the village. The Jews of the village were merchants. There was a synagogue. Bibrka was occupied on June 30, 1941.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

1,260 Jews were deported to Belzec on August 12, 1942 by the Sipo and the German gendarmerie. On December 1, 1942, a ghetto was created. After an action on December 8, hundreds of Jews were also deported to Belzec. Yahad’s witness, Yevstafi I. (Witness N° 733) remembers that other Jews from the ghetto were shot in the brickyard. Yosif P. (Witness N°735) remembers that Germans asked inhabitants to dig graves next to the brickyard. He saw how Jewish men, women and children had to go inside the grave, lay down on the ground and were shot by the Germans with carbines. The shooting lasted 30 minutes. On April 13, 1943, the liquidation of the ghetto of Bibrka  took place. The Jews were gathered on the square of the synagogue. The Jews had to leave their valuables in boxes. Ten Jews were escorted to the nearby village of Volove in order to dig graves. 159 Jews were selected for work. The other 1,000 Jews were shot in nearby village Volove.
