Witness interview

Kazimierz N., born in 1928: “We came here and saw that the house had been dismantled. Then, I noticed a dead body. It was a Jew called Aron. A minute later my father called me. We saw another three bodies. They were Jews we knew. One of them was Duchi, and his daughter Laika, a very beautiful girl. And the third one was Budulec. I remember them all. They were killed by three Soviet prisoners of war who fled the camp in Zamosc and found weapons somewhere. I think these Jews weren’t killed because they were Jewish, but rather because the prisoners of war needed a place to hide themselves. I don’t think it was for gold, the Jews didn’t have it here.” (Witness n°747, interviewed in Husiny, on October 5, 2017).

Historical note

Husiny is a small village located about 120 km south of Lublin. According to a local resident, there were several Jewish houses in a hamlet near the village. The majority of Jews lived in the nearing town of Józefów. According to the 1921 census, 1,050 Jews lived in Józefów. On the eve of the German occupation, the Jewish community numbered approximately 1,700.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

The area was occupied by Germans in September 1939. There is no information about the mass executions of Jews conducted in this village in the historical sources. All the Jews from the area were taken to the Krasnobród ghetto. However, according to Yahad’s witness, four Jews were killed near Husiny. They were Aron, Budulec, Duchi and his daughter Layka. They were killed in their house, allegedly by prisoners of war who had escaped from the Zamosc camp.
