Historical note

Odelsk is a village located 30 km South of Grodno, close to the Polish border. The village was under German occupation from 1941 to 1944. There were a few Jewish families living in the village before the war. There was also a Jewish colony called Colony Isaac, 1 km away from Odelsk. In that colony, most of the Jews were peasants. They used to come to Odelsk to go to the synagogue. Today, there are no more traces of this Colony.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

The Odelsk Jews were early deported to the Sokolka ghetto, a city located today in Poland, from where they were later sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp. The same fate happened to the Colony Isaac Jews, but according to Stanislav P., interviewed by Yahad-In Unum’s team, a small fenced ghetto was established for a few weeks, before the deportation of the local Jews. A few Jews were shot in the Jewish cemetery, according to witness Anton P. According to him, those were the Jews trying to hide.
