Yela S. evokes: “From Ratne, they were taken in trucks to the forest. The trucks stopped about 100m from the pit and the [Jews] were forced to run towards the pit. They ran in two toward the big pit. Then, they positioned themselves at the edge of the pit and were shot. A German with a submachine gun remained standing 5m away from the pit. They requisitioned a dozen local people to dig the pit.” (Eyewitness N°469, interviewed in Prokhid, on April 04, 2007)
Prokhid is located about 50 km (31 miles) north of Kovel at direction of Brest. The village was occupied by Germans at the end of June 1941.
The first anti-Jewish actions started at the end of summer beginning of autumn 1941. All Jews were forced to wear distinguishing badges. They were subjected to force labor, assaults and robbery. For further information about the mass killings, please, visit the profile of Ratne.
