Witness interview

Yefrosenia T., born in 1923, remembered: “Almost all local Jews were craftsmen; they lived throughout the entire village. I remember one of them. He was a tailor, a very good one. His last name was Akhmianskyi. He had a wife and children. I saw him the day of the execution. He was killed along with his family in the well near the village.” (Testimony n°2204 interviewed in Nadezhdivka on May 18th, 2017)

Historical note

Nadezhdivka is located 25 km north-west of Kherson. The village was founded in 1830, as a Jewish agricultural colony n°34 known as well under the name of Zorivka. According to the census, 47 Jews lived in Nadezhdivka in 1910. According to the witness there was a kolkhoz in the village but the Jews did not work there since they were engaged in small-scale trade and handcraft. There was a synagogue. Today the colony does not exist anymore and nothing left from it.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

The village was occupied in the mid-August 1941. By that time the majority of local Jews managed to evacuate. With the help of the local witnesses Yahad-In Unum’s team managed to find the killing site of a few dozen Jews (98 according to the historical sources) brought from the colony No. 34 (called Kahanovychi) and shot in the early September, 1941. The execution site is located close to the road between the villages of Zorivka and Nadezhdivka.
