Oleksiy V. recalls: “There was a starost. I was requisitioned to dig anti-tank pits in Skole before the arrival of the Russians. There was no Ukrainian police, only the German police.” (Witness N°1823, interviewed in Klymets, on September 1, 2013.)

German archives

“One day, I saw a Jew hanged on a tree. He was dead. The tree was located near the office of the Sipo.” [Deposition of Rudolf W., customs officer, made in Munich, on April 12, 1967, B162-25600].

Historical note

The town is situated 126 km southwest of Lviv. According to the witnesses interviewed by Yahad, there were about six Jewish families living in the town before the war. Before the war, there was no synagogue and all Jewish ceremonies took place at the Rabbi’s house.  The town was occupied by Germans in early July 1941.

Holocaust by bullets in figures

During the war, Klymets was situated at the border between Hungary and Ukraine. According to the Yahad field research approximately 12 Jews were murdered by the Germans in the summer of 1942.
