Yelena M. evokes: "Slovak soldiers who stayed in the village announced to my mother that the Jews were going to be killed the next day. These soldiers were forced by Germans to kill the Jews." (Witness N°1598, interviewed in November, 2012)
Zatyshne is a small village west of Donestk, with a significant Jewish population living there before the war. The village was under German occupation between 1941 and 1943.
The Jews of the village were gathered and killed in houses in the village, by Czech or Slovak soldiers who moved up to the front. Their bodies were then buried in a kitchen garden. There were more than one hundred victims.
